May 18, 2009
Marketing, technical and environmental issues will be discussed and debated at a series of seminars and a question time to be staged at NSA North Sheep 2009, the northern region's biennial one day event to be staged on Wednesday, 3 June at Laund Farm, Chipping, Preston by kind permission of the Stott family. The 16th technical event of its kind plans are well in advance to build on its previous success to attract a crowd of more than 6,000 and 250 trade stands.

An outlook on exports breakfast seminar led by AHDB's Peter Hardwick will explore opportunities for the entire supply sector and the burgeoning sheep meat market. Later on, Question Time will provide farmers with the opportunity to field their questions on sheep marketing, live or dead, to a panel of speakers featuring NSA's Peter Morris, AIMS' Norman Bagley, the LAA's Chris Dodds, St Merryn buyer, John Dracup and farmer, Alistair Mackintosh.

Environment vs food production will come under the microscope during the lunchtime Big Debate, where visitors will be able to find out where future priorities lie from NFU uplands spokesman, Will Cockbain, Natural England's policy advisor, James LePage and farmer, Malcolm Corbett.

The benefits of using Estimated Breeding Values when choosing new breeding stock will be explained by SAC's Lutz Bunger and local farmer, John Dugdale, while the latest on EID will be reported by Defra's Terry Gurnhill. The sponsors' seminars will be led by Novartis Animal Health's Simon Harris offering information on measures to control Blowfly, while Rumenco's David Thornton and SAC's Dr John Vipond will focus on getting to grips with forage test results.

Finally, there will be an opportunity to find out more about milking sheep when host farmer Simon Stott discusses his family's successful diversification enterprise featuring 400 Friesland ewes, Judy Bell of Thirsk based Shepherds Purse Cheese will explain what it takes to manage an award winning cheese making business and Gerald Williams of the British Sheep Dairying Association will discuss opportunities for the sector within the UK and beyond.

NSA North Sheep 2009 organiser, Julie Sedgewick comments: "The event is offering a comprehensive programme of seminars and discussion forums for all members of the sheep sector, providing them with opportunities to reflect on their businesses and make more informed decisions during a period of innumerable challenges."
