NSA North Sheep 2009, the National Sheep Association northern region's biennial business to business event was hailed as a resounding success with a tremendous attendance of farmers, trade exhibitors and breed representatives.

The event was staged on Wednesday 3 June, at Laund Farm, Chipping, Preston, Lancashire by kind permission of the Stott family.

More than 9,000 visitors attended including 20 overseas visitors from five different countries featuring official inward missions from France, Romania, and Spain, and the crowd was keen to discuss business with over 200 trade stands, which included 42 breed societies and associations.

The event which was officially opened by shadow spokesperson for agriculture and rural affairs, Jim Paice MP, was a 'resounding success' as far as both visitors and exhibitors were concerned, according to NSA North Sheep chairman, John Geldard.

"NSA North Sheep 2009 reflected the optimism for which sheep farmers are renowned. Despite, the numerous challenges currently facing the industry, including EID and proposed responsibility and cost sharing, there was an upbeat feeling to the event," he said.

"Exhibitors reported good sized orders placed, the demonstrations and competitions proved to be popular and each of the seminars attracted a packed attendance. There is no doubt that sheep farmers are eager to learn and the event demonstrated their enthusiasm to find out more about a wide range of issues affecting their business and start to focus on the bigger picture," he commented adding. "The UK ewe population has fallen by 30% in the last nine years, and the trend continues while our world population and demand for protein grows, therefore I believe that sheep farming in the next two decades is going to be quite different from that of the previous, and out next generation of sheep keepers face an extremely very optimistic future."
