NSA North Sheep 2007 will show case the UK sheep industry, noted for being the largest and the most advanced and technically efficient in Europe. The UK comprises a flock of more than 20 million ewes managed by 70,000 sheep farmers operating a diverse range of management systems according to local climate and topography.

There will be an opportunity to explore the majority of the UK’s 70 different sheep breeds. These will include the hardy hill and mountain breeds which account for approximately 50% of the national flock and have been developed to graze rough vegetation exposed to extremes of climate. These breeds are linked to the lowlands by a stratified system which has been developed over several generations and features a hybrid ewe that accounts for a further 40% of our flock. That hybrid or crossbred ewe together with our range of high performance terminal sires feature largely in the UK’s prime lamb production located in the lowland areas.

Visitors will find that UK sheep breeders are involved in modern genetic development programmes which are enabling them to select for key performance traits in particular growth and muscling to maximize output, combined with easy care traits suited to low input systems. Equally important to these sheep breeders has been the introduction of flock health plans.

NSA North Sheep 2007 will also feature the latest developments in technical equipment throughout the supply chain. The UK sheep sector continues at the forefront with cutting edge developments in order to maintain its competitiveness. These technical exhibits will include electronic identification, feeding and weighing equipment and transportation.

There will also be an opportunity to explore with specialist the latest developments in sheep nutrition, health and welfare, and other management aspects.

“We offer a very warm welcome to our overseas visitors to the UK’s leading technical sheep event in 2007,” says event organizer, Julie Sedgewick. “We are extremely proud of our industry and the great strides it has made in developing its genetics, nutrition and management systems which we are aware have already commanded interest in the last 12 months from a number of countries including Estonia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania.”

NSA North Sheep 2007, is organized by representatives from the National Sheep Association who are working closely with the British Livestock Genetics Consortium and International Agriculture and Technology Centre to facilitate inward missions to the event, and also arrange visits to meet with UK industry representatives.

NSA North Sheep 2007 is located within 60 minutes from both Newcastle and Teesside Airports.
