NSA North Sheep 2009's committee organised an array of competitive activities throughout the event - here are the winners...

National Lamb Selection Competition

A competition to test all visitors stock judging skills sponsored by Dugdale Nutrition and staged on the EBLEX stand with four lambs up for judging. The £100 first prize and 0.5t lamb finishing pellets went to Margaret Iveson, Raydaleside, Leyburn, while James Petty, Skipton was the highest placed entry from entrants 21 years and under.

Stockjudging Competition

Visitors put their stockjudging skills to the test in a competition featuring pens of Bluefaced Leicester ewes, Bluefaced Leicester tup lambs, Swaledale gimmers, Mule gimmer lambs, and Frieslands. The competition had three open sections, gents, ladies and under 21s, each offering cash prizes donated by Honda UK/Robert Taylor and Sons; first £50, second £30, and third £20, with £100 donated by Clitheroe Auction Mart to the overall winner, Andrew Huddleston, Wray, Lancaster.

A £350 cheque from the competition's proceeds was presented to the event's charity, the Great North West Air Ambulance Service.

NSA North Sheep Young Shepherd of the Year

NSA Northern Region demonstrated its commitment towards encouraging all students and youngsters involved in practical sheep management activities by staging the first ever NSA North Sheep Young Shepherd of the Year award at the event.

Open to college students, YFC members and young people up to 26 years old based in the north of England, this award was designed to test their shepherding skills in a pentathlon of activities. The Carrs Billington Agriculture sponsored award had £300 at stake for the winner, Anthony Garth, of Hudswell, Richmond who also received the Ali Johnson Perpetual Trophy. Anthony goes forward to represent the NSA Northern Region at the NSA Shepherd of the Year final to be staged at NSA Sheep 2010, Malvern.
