What to see and do
There's plenty to see and do at NSA North Sheep 2007. Here are some of the demonstrations, displays and competitions taking place during the day...
BRITISH WOOL MARKETING BOARD: Visit the wool board display, providing shearing and gear maintenance courses, technical support and service for 13,000 producers in this region.
COMBICLAMP: David Ritchie (Implements) will give a working demonstration of their CombiClamp from New Zealand – the ultimate in sheep handling, for easier dagging, drenching, vaccinating, ear tagging and drafting.
DRY STONE WALLING: Members of the Northumbria branch of the Dry Stone Walling Association will give a working display. The branch is a charity which promotes dry stone walling by carrying out practical demonstrations and organising training days.
EBLEX: Staff from the Better Returns Programme will give a display and demo on live lamb selection, carcase display with butchery/carcase cutting, ram MoTs and a footcare demo.
EID AND TAGGING: Shearwell Data supplies animal identification and management systems from ministry-approved cattle and sheep tags to full management systems using EID and on farm software. Visit this area for a display of EID and other identification and management systems.
FARM TOUR: View North Hanging Wells and the Wear Valley from the comfort of a purpose built trailer on a 40-minute guided tour.
HAND BLADE SHEARING: Display of the traditional removal of a sheep’s fleece with hand shears.
POUR ON DEMONSTRATION: Novartis are the manufacturers of CLIK - the hardest-working treatment for season-long (16 weeks) full body, blowfly strike prevention. Demonstration on the use of CLIK at 11.30 am, 1.30pm and 2.30 pm.
SCULPTURES: Display of quality livestock sculptures, sheep and cattle - all sculpted and individually hand-painted by Jean Fowler.

INTERVET SHEEP DOG TRIAL: New for NSA North Sheep 2007, an invitation team competition. Five local teams will compete, each comprised of six members. Judge Mr J Calvert from Carlisle will judge the 30 dogs from 9am to 3pm. Prizes sponsored by Intervet UK Ltd.
INTERVET STOCK-JUDGING COMPETITION: This year the chosen charity to benefit from the £2 entry fee will be the Great North Air Ambulance Service. There will be three sections, with prize money donated by Intervet UK Ltd: Gents, Ladies and Under 21 years. Entrants will have to place five pens. The overall winner will receive a galvanised lamb weigher, kindly donated by David Ritchie (Implements) Ltd.
SPINNING, WEAVING, FELTING AND DYEING: The Wool Clip is a co-operative founded in 2001. A demonstration of spinning and weaving will be given by members, along with a display of goods made from Swaledale and Herdwick wool.
STICK-MAKING: Hand-made walking sticks and shepherd crooks, stick-making accessories and stick courses. Brian Bannister will be demonstrating stick-making techniques throughout the day.
